How To Deal With Procrastination

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. I hope all of you are doing well. IN today’s article, we are going to talk about an evergreen problem – Procrastination. Now, i don’t need to explain what it means, cause, you are here because you are dealing with it. Still, if you want to know : Procrastination is the feeling when you know that you have to do a particular work, you also know that it’s important for your growth, but you still can’t get yourself to do it. Feels stuck, right !

Now, you must have tried one way or the other to beat procrastination. Something might have worked for you for a little time, and then you may have rolled back to your procrastination club again. But don’t worry, you are not alone. Being a student, also a teacher at a school, i have numerous examples where i have seen people/students struggling with procrastination. To be honest, i am also not 100% immune to this.

But, as i am in the final year of my Master’s degree, i have to study a lot along with managing my teacher job. So, i face many situations where i don’t want to do a particular work. It can be simply because i’m tired. And sometimes, it’s just pure procrastination. But my dear friends, i have found some practical and realistic solutions that worked for me. Although i am not a professional procrastination coach, but i will try my best to help you with this issue. All the solutions that i am going to offer here are based on my real life experiences. They may/may not work for you. But if you try, these tips can help you create an anti procrastination lifestyle for yourself.

So, Let’s begin !

1. Ask Yourself “Why” : You Need To The Purpose

Look, you are looking for ways to beat procrastination because you are bothered by it. You are bothered because you understand that something needs to be done but you are not doing it. You are bothered : it means it is important. Now, you need to ask yourself “WHY” ? Why the non-completion of that task bothering you ? And if it’s important, then why are you cancelling it ?

When you ask yourself “WHY”, you will, most probably get a purposeful answer. You will get to know why it’s important to you. For exam, From a student’s point of view, if you ask yourself : Why am i bothered by not studying ? ANSWER : Because if you don’t study, you block your pathway to success. And can you afford that ? NO ! That’s why, you need to gear up, get into the anti procrastination zone and get your work done.

2. Just Jump Into The Work : No Unnecessary Thoughts

Sometimes when we put a lot of thought about how to do a particular work, when to do it, under what circumstances, etc., it becomes very difficult for us to even begin with. When we think a lot about beginning, we fall into the trap of perfectionism and the work never starts. I am not a professional procrastination coach, but I know, that, if without thinking a lot, I immediately start my work – chances are, that, I will continue it.

I have tried and tested this method upon myself. Whenever I don’t want to read/study a chapter, I just open the book and I say to myself : “Let’s read only two lines.” And then I start studying. I don’t let my brain give me any thoughts otherwise. I just keep on reading and within some time, I complete my chapter. This way, I am able to beat procrastination and get my work done. The main trick here is to avoid unnecessary thoughts and just begin with the work.

3. Don’t Wait For The Perfect Momemt

Believe it or not, procrastination and perfectionism are best friends. Most of the time, we don’t begin our work simply because the moment isn’t perfect enough for us. We keep on waiting for the right time, for the perfect time to come, and it never comes. Then, out of nowhere, we are too late. Sometimes so late that we miss many opportunities waiting for the perfection, which never existed.

Many procrastination coaches suggest that, instead of waiting for the perfect moment, we should simply begin with the work. We should keep it in our mind that perfect time does not come, we have to create it.

4. Break The Monotony – Keep Switching Tasks

Whenever we do a same work again and again, everyday, it becomes boring. Our brain likes to be involved in interesting things. In order to make things interesting, you have to build anti procrastination mindset.

For students, the advice is to keep switching between subjects. This will keep your brain active and you will be able to beat procrastination.

I have followed these four tips and they have worked for me. I hope they are helpful to you as well. In order to beat procrastination, the first thing that helps a lot is willpower and determination. If you are struggling with developing a strong willpower or how to be determined, please write down in the comments. I will explain it with my life experiences. Try to create an anti procrastination environment around you, so that you can work actively.

In the end, I would like to say that any change does not take place in one single day. But one day, if you are consistent, you will definitely be able to see changes. Good luck !
